The process of devising was born in Jacques Lecoq’s school in Paris. I myself finished my degree in devising at the University of Kent at Canterbury. For me devising means ‘playing’. Those who go on stage need to be able to play, playing games, playing with sentences and words, playing with one’s body and playing with the space. Playing allows you to get in touch with many different feelings and how to handle those. This is what you need on stage! Creating a piece through devising allows an exciting process for the performer and actor.
A given text often allows less devising so that here directing is a better way to set up a play.
